More than 100 experts in international law in the United States, including experts from universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford and California, said in Thursday’s letter that the behaviour of US forces and statements by senior US officials “raise serious concerns about violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including possible war crimes.”
The letter referred in particular to a comment made by Trump in mid-March saying that the United States could launch strikes on Iran “just for fun.” She also cited comments made by Defence Secretary Pete Higseth in early March saying that the United States is not fighting according to the “stupid rules of engagement”.
The letter was posted on the website of the journal (Just Security), which specialises in political affairs.
Experts said they were “very concerned about the strikes targeting schools, health facilities and homes,” referring to a strike that targeted a school in Iran on the first day of the war.
A prominent U.S. Muslim rights group has warned that Trump’s speech during the war, including his threat to strike Iran to “bring it back to the Stone Age,” is “dehumanised” rhetoric.
